South Greensburg, PA

South Greensburg is a borough just south of Greensburg in Westmoreland County, with 2,135 residents in the 2020 census. Its older story begins with Michael Rugh, who acquired a farm here in 1780; the Rugh family house at 1213 Broad Street still marks that beginning. The place changed sharply in the late nineteenth century, when coal and coke operations, a brickyard, workers’ houses, and a trolley line turned the farm country into an industrial neighborhood. The borough was incorporated in 1891. For much of the twentieth century, Walworth Valves was the big employer, with the plant reaching about 1,500 workers before closing in 1980.

South Greensburg today is small and closely tied to the larger Greensburg area. The old factory ground has become Wellington Square and other commercial space, while the street grid still carries the borough’s industrial-era shape. Community Park and Kelley Park provide pavilions and open space for rentals and neighborhood gatherings; the Huff Avenue pavilion is under construction work in 2026. Borough business is the regular stuff—roads, utilities, parks, meetings, and keeping a compact municipality moving. The local character comes from that clear layering: a Rugh farm, a coal-and-trolley town, a valve factory, and a present-day borough folded into the Greensburg orbit.
