About South Hero

South Hero is the primary village and a census-designated place in the town of South Hero, with 225 residents in the 2020 census. It sits on the southern part of South Hero Island in Grand Isle County, bordered to the north by Keeler Bay and crossed by U.S. Route 2. Burlington is about 18 miles southeast, while Alburgh is 26 miles north, so the village works as a small stop along the Lake Champlain Islands route.

The surrounding town was chartered in 1779 and first settled by boat in 1783. Agriculture, dairy farms, and apple orchards still share the island with summer homes, camps, marinas, a town beach, and public boat launches. South Hero Village and Keeler Bay are the two denser village areas, with Folsom Elementary School near the South Hero center. The local map shifts quickly from Route 2 storefronts and school grounds to lake shore, fields, and working farm lanes across the island through all four seasons.
