South Holland is a south suburban Chicago village built on low ground near the Calumet River. It was first settled in 1846 by immigrants from South Holland in the Netherlands, and that Dutch Protestant heritage long shaped the community's civic culture. South Suburban College has its main campus there, giving the village a regional education role.
