South Lake Tahoe extends for about five miles along U.S. Route 50 at the southern edge of Lake Tahoe, roughly 6,237 feet above sea level. Its western neighborhoods cluster around “The Y,” where U.S. 50, State Route 89, and Lake Tahoe Boulevard meet; the eastern end reaches the Nevada line beside Stateline, Heavenly Mountain Resort, hotels, restaurants, and casinos across the border. The Sierra Nevada city was El Dorado County’s most populous in 2020, with 21,330 residents, slightly fewer than its 21,403 residents in 2010. Lake Tahoe Airport handles general aviation, while scheduled airline passengers use Reno–Tahoe International Airport. South Lake Tahoe is also home to Lake Tahoe Community College.
