South Miami fits a Metrorail stop, a traditional commercial district, residential streets, and a sizable park system into just 2.27 square miles. Trains at South Miami station connect with four Metrobus routes, and its 816-space garage also serves commuters from beyond the city. For shorter trips, MetroConnect SoMi replaced the former Freebee service in February 2025. The on-demand shared rides are free, operate weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and connect homes, errands, appointments, downtown destinations, and regional transit hubs. East of the station, shops, restaurants, services, and entertainment line Sunset Drive and adjacent streets. The city’s 2025–2026 calendar used that district for monthly SoMi Second Saturdays night markets, a two-day February art festival, and the December Parade of the Elves, making street closures and evening activity recurring parts of downtown life rather than one annual occasion.

Neighborhood recreation is distributed among facilities with different purposes. Dante Fascell Park combines six clay tennis courts, basketball and handball, beach volleyball, a playground and tot lot, sculpture garden, picnic shelters, and a short walking and jogging loop. The 22,000-square-foot Gibson-Bethel Community Center has an indoor gym, fitness room, computer lab, classroom, art space, and multipurpose rooms, while South Miami Park is organized around athletic fields and leagues.

Recent growth has occurred within the city’s small footprint: the 2025 estimate of 13,660 was 13.5 percent above the 2020 estimates base. During 2020–2024, 53.8 percent of residents identified as Hispanic or Latino, 43.0 percent were foreign-born, and 60.3 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home. Owner occupancy was 60.2 percent, the median value of an owner-occupied home was $829,400, median gross rent was $1,764, and workers’ mean travel time was 30.9 minutes. Transit options and a dense local business district coexist with housing costs characteristic of the wider Miami market.
