South Plainfield, NJ

South Plainfield reached its municipal centennial in 2026. A state act approved on March 10, 1926, authorized a borough from part of Piscataway Township, subject to a referendum that local voters approved the following month. The borough later corrected its official seal to use March 10 as the incorporation date. South Plainfield had 24,338 residents when counted in 2020; the July 2025 estimate was 24,891. Outdoor options include two substantial green spaces. The 127-acre Spring Lake Park surrounds a five-acre lake and provides a walking and bicycle path, fishing, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, gazebo, and performance stage. Along the borough's eastern edge, the Peter J. Barnes III Wildlife Preserve protects the largest contiguous wetland system in northern Middlesex County. A mile-long trail completed in 2024 begins at a Coolidge Street trailhead in South Plainfield and connects through the woods toward Edison's Songbird Trail.

Several year-round services operate indoors. The Recreation Department uses the Police Athletic League building, where its program page lists open pickleball hours, a gym, weight room, seasonal pool, camps, and youth and adult activities. NJ Transit Route 819 links stops in the borough with Plainfield and Metuchen rail stations, Piscataway, and Edison. South Plainfield Public Library opens seven days a week and offers study-room reservations, museum passes, mobile printing, digital media, and access to more than 30 partner libraries across Middlesex, Union, Somerset, and Monmouth counties. A licensed social worker also holds private appointments and walk-in hours there.
