South Salt Lake sits directly south of Salt Lake City and is busy reinventing itself. Historically an industrial rail corridor between I-15 and I-80, the city now boasts some of the most seamless transit connections in the valley. Multiple TRAX light rail lines and the S-Line streetcar all converge at Central Pointe, putting downtown Salt Lake City and Sugar House minutes away. Over the last decade, developers and local businesses have turned former warehouses and industrial lots into fresh apartment buildings, offices, and neighborhood hangouts. You will notice sleek new mid-rises sitting right next to legacy industrial buildings, reflecting a city actively transforming into a walkable urban hub.

Much of that creative energy gravitates toward the district around the historic Horton Water Tower. Here, independent artist studios and small workshops share space with popular craft breweries and distilleries. The area doubles as an outdoor gallery, with colorful, building-sized murals covering dozens of warehouse facades, and new pieces added every spring during Mural Fest. Between regular block parties, the annual Craftoberfest, and plans for a new tree-lined civic plaza under the water tower, the neighborhood provides an artistic, laid-back gathering spot for residents.

Food lovers will quickly discover the Chinatown development on State Street, one of the most exciting culinary destinations in the valley. Anchored by a huge Asian supermarket, the center brings together dozens of restaurants, bakeries, and specialty stores featuring Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Japanese cuisine. South Salt Lake is one of the most culturally diverse corners of the region, which shows in its global food scene and active community spaces. The city also invests heavily in families through its Promise South Salt Lake initiative, offering free after-school programs, adult education classes, and supportive community centers.

Green space and outdoor recreation are woven through the city as well. Along the western border, the paved Jordan River Parkway path connects South Salt Lake to a sprawling regional trail network, canoe access points, and the Tracy Aviary Nature Center. Commuters and cyclists can take Parley's Trail across town to quickly reach neighboring parks and districts. When you want a relaxing afternoon outdoors, Fitts Park is the go-to spot, featuring shaded picnic pavilions, a community garden, playgrounds, and paved paths along Mill Creek.
