About South Salt Lake

South Salt Lake is creating a civic center from industrial blocks rather than an inherited Main Street. The Creative Industries Zone groups studios, manufacturers, breweries, and distilleries around the Horton Water Tower. By early 2026, the city’s mural program had placed 52 works here, with ten more commissioned annually through Mural Fest. The city’s May 2026 proposal for a plaza beneath the water tower was candid about what the district still lacked: no public open space existed in either the downtown or Water Tower neighborhood. Plans called for trees, gathering areas, art, and free activities as the surrounding public-works campus is rebuilt. Reused buildings, outdoor art, and an unfinished public realm show a downtown still being assembled. The city’s 6.94 square miles also contain substantial cultural and housing variety. During 2020 through 2024, 22.4 percent of residents were born outside the United States and 31.0 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home.

Only 38.2 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied; the median value of those homes was $410,200, while median gross rent was $1,451. The mean trip to work was 20.3 minutes. Promise South Salt Lake responds to this mixed, renter-majority community with free afterschool and summer programs, adult education, family support, and resource navigation at schools and community centers; the city says the initiative reaches more than 2,000 young people and their families each year. Outdoor routes cross municipal boundaries as well. About 3.5 miles of the Jordan River Parkway and 2.6 miles of Parley’s Trail run through South Salt Lake, connecting neighborhood parks with longer regional paths. Fitts Park adds playgrounds, exercise and bicycle courses, pavilions, a community garden, and the Mill Creek Trail. Promise centers, neighborhood parks, and cross-city trails broaden community activity beyond the unfinished downtown.
