South Shaftsbury, VT

South Shaftsbury is the largest settlement in the Town of Shaftsbury, in Bennington County, where Historic Route 7A and Route 67 pass through a landscape of farms, old houses, mills, and wooded hills. The area’s best-known resident was Robert Frost, who lived at the Stone House from 1920 to 1929 and at The Gully from 1929 to 1938. He wrote and revised poems here, received two Pulitzer Prizes while associated with The Gully, and turned a working Vermont landscape into part of the country’s literary memory.

The Robert Frost Stone House Museum, now connected with Bennington College, shares South Shaftsbury with the Shaftsbury Country Store, Cole Hall, old farmsteads, and the sites of former iron, marble, and milling work. Bennington supplies larger shopping, employment, and cultural options, but South Shaftsbury keeps its own village-scale routines around schools, roads, homes, and local businesses. Frost’s presence draws visitors, yet the community’s day-to-day character comes from the same fields, stone buildings, and mountain roads that existed before the poems and remain after the tours.
