South Uniontown, PA

South Uniontown is the built-up southwestern edge of Uniontown in Fayette County, but it is counted as a census-designated place in South Union Township. U.S. 40 and 119, including the Mon–Fayette Expressway route, form the western edge, so highway movement is part of the local map. The township dates to 1851, when old Union Township was divided along the National Road into North and South Union. That is the useful bit of local context: South Uniontown is both an extension of the county seat and part of a township with its own history.

South Union Township's current landmarks are practical ones. The township recreation center, Areford Park, South Union Community Park, and the Sheepskin Trail give the area places for sports, gathering, and a short walk, while the trail's covered bridge adds a little old-road character. Uniontown is right beside the CDP, but the township line still matters for services and local identity. South Uniontown is the kind of place where a bypass, a park system, and a 19th-century township boundary all show up in the same few miles.
