South Williamson, KY

South Williamson is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northeastern Pike County, Kentucky, across the Tug Fork River from Williamson, West Virginia. U.S. Route 119 and Kentucky Route 292 organize the road map through this Appalachian border country, while the river supplies the line between the two states. The wider area includes Goody, Forest Hills, Toler, and Belfry, so South Williamson is best understood as one piece of a connected Pike County landscape. Coal mining, transportation, health care, and retail have all shaped the local economy, and Southside Mall gives the community a visible commercial reference point.

The river also carries a harder history. The Hatfield-McCoy feud unfolded across the Kentucky and West Virginia counties around the Tug Fork, and later floods repeatedly tested the communities along its banks. A floodwall built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after the devastating 1977 flood remains part of South Williamson's physical map. The area has considered incorporation more than once but remains an unincorporated CDP.
