South Windham, ME

South Windham is a Cumberland County CDP in the Town of Windham, stretched along the Presumpscot River just below Little Falls. The 2020 census counted 1,215 residents. The river was the original road into the interior, and its falls supplied water power for mills; Major William Knight was running a sawmill at the falls by 1756. That makes the community's shape easy to read: water, mills, roads, and a village center pressed into a narrow river corridor. You can still feel that river-first layout today.

South Windham sits in the Portland metro, with Route 202 carrying the everyday traffic and Little Falls across the river in Gorham. The former Maine Central Railroad line added another transportation layer, while the Windham town plan still treats the river villages as their own part of the town. Parks, shops, older mill sites, and river crossings give the place a working local texture. South Windham's local scoop is a mill-and-river community where the Presumpscot still does the orienting.
