South Zanesville, OH

South Zanesville is a Muskingum County village along the Muskingum River near the mouth of Moxahala Creek, immediately south of Zanesville. The 2020 census counted 1,894 residents. Main Street, the village municipal building, water department, police and fire departments, and nearby Maysville schools give the community its civic shape. The river valley, Maysville campus, and roads into Zanesville keep the village tied to the county seat's jobs, services, and shopping.

South Zanesville was laid out in 1890 on former farm ground as promoters advertised a new industrial town. Rail lines reached it early, and pottery, brick, buggy, spoke-and-wheel, foundry, and machine works followed; the village also built its own waterworks and filtration plant as it resisted annexation by Zanesville. The Maysville Local School District grew from the 1956 merger of South Zanesville and Springfield districts, and its elementary and secondary campus now sits just south of town. Today the village's old industrial geography survives in the rail corridors, municipal services, and river crossings, while daily life runs through school, water, fire protection, and the nearby city.
