About Southern Shops

Southern Shops is a Spartanburg County CDP of 3,663 residents in the 2020 census, on the west side of the Spartanburg urban area around Business I-85, New Cut Road, and Community College Drive. The CDP sits on Spartanburg’s western edge. Most of the community falls in Spartanburg County School District 6, with a smaller portion in District 2. The highway puts the neighborhood in the Upstate’s larger road and campus network. The defining local institution is Spartanburg Community College’s Giles Campus, the college’s first campus and current headquarters.

Its programs range from health sciences and nursing to automotive, welding, horticulture, culinary, and other technical fields; campus services include a library, student hub, career services, and a horticulture garden. SPARTA Route 5 connects the campus with downtown Spartanburg and USC-Upstate on weekday trips, giving the community a direct transit link to the wider city. The local scoop is a compact CDP organized around a community-college campus and the roads that feed it.
