About Southern View
Southern View is a Sangamon County village pressed against Springfield’s south side, a separate municipal pocket inside the capital’s metro area. The village incorporated on July 17, 1939, when residents voted to create a water system through a connection with Springfield. That origin still helps place it: Southern View has its own village government and local businesses, with the larger city right along the northern edge.
The community is compact, with residential and commercial districts sharing the same small footprint. Southern View Park is the everyday center, covering 29 acres with baseball fields, a soccer field, a roller-hockey arena, a pond, play areas, and covered gathering spaces. The park is where the village’s separate identity is easiest to see on the ground, with sports fields, water, and covered spaces in one place. Multigenerational ties fit a place built around a municipal line rather than a separate downtown. Think of Southern View as a small south-Springfield village with its own park, water history, and commercial strip.
