Southwest City, MO

Southwest City is a McDonald County city in the far southwestern corner of Missouri, near the point where Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma meet. The 2020 census counted 922 residents. Missouri Route 43 runs through town as Main Street, and the surrounding Ozarks country has long connected the settlement to frontier trade, farming, and movement along the border. Early settlers arrived in the 1840s, while the name reflects the city’s position at the county’s southwestern edge.

McDonald County R-I School District serves local students. The town’s history also sits near the Trail of Tears route and the older Native presence and exchange that shaped the region before and during settlement. Today the state-line geography remains the first thing many travelers notice: Oklahoma and Arkansas are close, Route 43 runs through the center, and small roads lead into a rural corner of the Ozarks. Southwest City is a border town in the plainest sense, with agriculture, highways, and three-state geography sharing one local map.
