Spearman, TX

Spearman is the Hansford County seat, a Panhandle city laid out in May 1917 in anticipation of the North Texas and Santa Fe Railway. The post office opened that year, and the railroad reached town in 1919 after World War I delayed construction. The city was named for Thomas E. Spearman, a railway vice president, so its street grid and civic role grew together with a transportation project.

Today the B. J. Buchanan Vintage Windmill Collection gives Spearman a particularly recognizable piece of local history: restored windmills are displayed in a park that ties the city to the machinery of the dry Panhandle. Spearman Independent School District serves local students through Gus Birdwell Elementary, Spearman Junior High, and Spearman High School. County offices, schools, and the windmill collection give the small city several daily reference points, while its semiarid climate and wide agricultural setting keep the older railroad-and-farm context visible. The county-seat role keeps civic business in the center of that rural landscape.
