Speers, PA

Speers is a Washington County borough on the west bank of the Monongahela River, about 35 miles south of Pittsburgh. The river makes the borough's eastern boundary and puts Belle Vernon across the water in Fayette County, with Rostraver in Westmoreland across the same broad valley. Speers is small, but its map sits at a serious transportation crossing: I-70's Belle Vernon Bridge runs from the borough over the river, while a railroad bridge carries the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway.

That bridge-and-river setup is the local story. The modern I-70 span opened in 1951, replacing an earlier low-level bridge, and the railroad crossing still keeps the old Monongahela corridor in use. Speers Borough's own civic map is compact—borough offices, residential streets, river access, and the bridge approaches—while nearby Belle Vernon handles much of the shopping and cross-river business. It is a southwest Pennsylvania river borough where the highway overhead, rail bridge, and working waterway tell you more than a conventional downtown would.
