Spencer, IN

Spencer is Owen County's seat in west-central Indiana, part of the Bloomington metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 2,454 residents. The town was platted in 1820 and named for Captain Spier Spencer, who died at Tippecanoe; a post office has operated here since 1821. The courthouse square and downtown remain the town's clearest civic setting, with historic buildings and local government clustered around them. The Owen County Courthouse sits at the center of the historic square each day. Spencer's present-day routines run through Owen Valley Community High School, the county courthouse, the public library, and downtown events.

Christmas at the Square and the Apple Butter Festival join annual Pride and Rev20 music events, giving the square a recurring schedule beyond county offices. The town's older buildings include the courthouse, town hall and fire station, and several homes listed on the National Register. Spencer is a county-seat town with a compact downtown, a shared school system, and a calendar that keeps the square in use.
