Sperryville, VA

Sperryville is a Rappahannock County village and census-designated place on two branches of the Thornton River, below the Thornton Gap entrance to Shenandoah National Park. Pasture and farmland surround its two main streets, and the village sits between the river and the northern Blue Ridge. Francis Thornton Jr. laid it out in 1820; a tannery opened in 1867, bringing workers and the houses that now shape much of the historic district.

Today the Sperryville Historic District follows the village streets and U.S. 522, with an early tavern, nineteenth-century houses, and former workers' homes still visible from the road. The Thornton River runs through the center, while Skyline Drive and Shenandoah's trails begin nearby at Thornton Gap. The Sperryville River Walk, shops, businesses, and farm-based places give the village a local calendar between park visits and county routines. The river keeps the village grounded. Sperryville is a Virginia foothill community where an old tannery village opens directly onto the Blue Ridge landscape.
