Spivey's Corner, NC

Spivey's Corner is a quiet rural community in Sampson County, centered around the intersection of U.S. 13 and U.S. 421. For decades, this tiny crossroads had a surprisingly big claim to fame as the home of the National Hollerin' Contest. Started in 1969 to celebrate the long-distance vocal calls farmers once used across open fields, the annual festival drew thousands of visitors to a town of just a few dozen residents. Contest champions even appeared on national television and received letters of congratulations from the White House.

The festival wrapped up its long run in the mid-2010s, and today Spivey's Corner has settled back into its easygoing agricultural rhythm. It is a peaceful slice of eastern North Carolina countryside where neighbors wave from pickup trucks, farmland stretches in every direction, and community life centers around the local volunteer fire department. You can still spot nods to its quirky heritage along Hollerin Road, making it a charming, quiet spot for anyone drawn to simple country living.
