Spooner, WI

Spooner is a Washburn County city at the junction of U.S. 53, U.S. 63, Wisconsin 70, and Wisconsin 253, which is how it earned the "Crossroads of the North" nickname. The 2020 census counted 2,573 residents. The North Wisconsin Railway reached the area in 1879, and the place grew into a serious rail hub before incorporating as a city in 1909. That railroad past is still unusually easy to see: the old 1902 Omaha depot now houses the Railroad Memories Museum. The other half of Spooner's local personality is on the water.

The Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum keeps canoes and canoeing at the center of the story, a good fit for a region built around lakes, rivers, and long summer days outdoors. Spooner's parks, library, museums, and Front Street businesses all sit inside the same small crossroads, so the place feels less like a pass-through than a town with a working center.
