Spring Valley gets its name from a natural freshwater spring that has drawn people to this corner of East County for centuries. Long before Spanish settlers and 19th-century ranchers arrived, Kumeyaay villagers lived around the freshwater source. In the late 1800s, historian Hubert Howe Bancroft established a large ranch here, and you can still tour the historic adobe ranch house and stone Rock House inside Bancroft County Park.
