Spring Valley, OH

Spring Valley is a Greene County village in the Dayton metropolitan area, with 415 residents at the 2020 census. Edward and Moses Walton, Quakers from Virginia, founded the community in 1844. Its location at the crossroads of the Cincinnati-Xenia Pike and the Little Miami Railroad gave the village a reason to grow as an agricultural marketing and processing center. The town was platted in 1844, and the railroad’s arrival soon tied its farm country to larger markets.

Spring Valley still carries that two-route beginning. The village sits within the rural landscape east of Dayton, where the old Pike and railroad corridor shaped the streets, businesses, and movement of farm goods. The founders came looking for a place to build, but transportation decided how the place would function: one road for overland travel, one rail line for longer connections, and fields around both. Spring Valley remains a small Ohio village whose history is built from Quaker settlement, agriculture, the railroad, the Little Miami line, and its old depot.
