St. David, AZ

St. David is a San Pedro River community in Cochise County, founded in 1877 by settlers connected to the Mormon colonization of southeastern Arizona. The Mormon Battalion passed through the valley in 1846, and the river corridor has stayed at the center of the town’s story. St. David’s green fields and yards come from groundwater in an otherwise dry part of the state. State Route 80 follows the old Patton Street alignment through the center, with roads leading toward Benson, Tombstone, and the rest of the San Pedro Valley.

School and local history do much of the civic work. Saint David Unified School District 21 runs the K–12 campus on Patton Street, and the San Pedro Valley Fair has been held at the high school since 1934. The St. David Heritage Society maintains the 1938 brick school building, organizes Pioneer Days, and collects the stories of the valley’s settlers, soldiers, and families. The San Pedro’s crossings at Dragoon Wash and Escalante Crossing still shape how people move through the area. St. David is a small desert community with a working river corridor, a school at its center, and a local calendar that keeps its 1870s beginnings close.
