St. Elizabeth, MO

St. Elizabeth is a Miller County village in central Missouri, where Missouri Routes 52 and E meet about two miles east of the Osage River. The 2020 census counted 418 residents. The village sits on the river’s eastern approach, with farm roads running through the surrounding hills and Route 52 carrying the longer trips toward Miller County’s larger communities. A local Catholic church and village government give the settlement its familiar center each day.

St. Elizabeth began as Charlestown, a name used when the town was platted in 1875 by Charles “Charley” Holtschneider, who owned the site. A post office called St. Elizabeth opened in 1877, and the community kept the name of its Roman Catholic church. German immigrants shaped much of the early church and farming community. Today the routes, church, homes, and nearby river valley still fit together in the same compact setting: a small Missouri village with a Catholic name, a German-rooted history, and a highway-and-water landscape.
