St. Francis, KS

St. Francis is Cheyenne County’s seat in the far northwest corner of Kansas, a semi-arid town reached by U.S. 36 and Kansas 27. The present city grew from Wano, an earlier settlement on the east bank of the Republican River, and was founded in 1887. The river, railroad, and county courthouse gave St. Francis its early shape, while the high plains set the terms for farming, wind, winter cold, and long distances between towns. The name may have honored the founder’s wife, a small uncertainty that has stayed in local history.

Today county offices, Cheyenne County Hospital, Good Samaritan Village, local businesses, and St. Francis USD 297 keep the town functioning as a regional service point. The school calendar matters beyond the classrooms, with sports and school events drawing families from the surrounding farm country. The city’s annual events and highway connections give residents reasons to meet and travelers a place to stop. St. Francis is built for the plains: practical, spread out, and organized around the county work that comes through the courthouse, hospital, school, and main roads.
