St. George Island, MD

St. George Island is a St. Mary’s County CDP connected to the mainland by a short bridge and served by the Piney Point post office. Its history is much bigger than the bridge: during the War of 1812, the British used the island as a headquarters for raids on nearby shipyards and plantations, and the island’s tall pines were cut for ship masts sent to England. Later, the Roman Catholic Church opened the island to settlement. St. George Island is Southern Maryland with a very real wartime backstory.
