Living in the desert means water is always top of mind, but St. George makes the most of its surroundings. Nearby Sand Hollow and Quail Creek State Parks give locals great spots for boating, paddleboarding, and cooling off during the hot summer months. The city was founded in the 1860s when pioneer families were sent south to grow cotton in the desert basin. While farming the harsh landscape proved difficult, their persistence laid the groundwork for the community you see today. You can still feel that early history in the downtown area, where nineteenth-century red-sandstone buildings sit right alongside modern shops and cafes. Landmarks like the St. George Tabernacle and the gleaming white St. George Temple still define the skyline and give the city a distinct sense of heritage.

The annual St. George Art Festival draws artists and visitors from across the region every spring, filling the park with craft booths, live music, and food trucks. Downtown also has a growing arts scene, with the St. George Art Museum and the beautifully restored Electric Theater hosting plays, concerts, and movie screenings in a walkable, welcoming setting.
