St. Joe, IN

St. Joe is a town in southeastern DeKalb County, close to the Indiana–Ohio line and the St. Joseph River. Jacob D. Leighty laid out the town in 1875, and its early map was built around a Baltimore & Ohio Railroad station. That combination of rail access, river country, and farm roads gave the place a clear role in the surrounding countryside without turning it into a big urban center. The St. Joseph River Greenway begins at St. Joe and follows the river through a short, wooded stretch.

St. Joe’s current community calendar has a wonderfully specific centerpiece: the annual Pickle Festival, with a parade, live music, contests, food vendors, fireworks, and tours of Sechler’s Pickle Factory. Riverdale Elementary sits by the greenway, and the town’s three parks, baseball ground, and local conservation club keep everyday life tied to the same compact town map.
