St. Regis, MT

St. Regis is a census-designated community in Mineral County where the St. Regis River meets the Clark Fork. The meeting of those waterways gives the town its shape: a mountain corridor with forested country in every direction and the larger routes of western Montana passing nearby. St. Regis sits within the Lolo National Forest, about 30 miles from Idaho, so a drive through town can quickly turn toward river access, timbered slopes, and long stretches of public land.

The community's name came through the Jesuit missionary Pierre-Jean De Smet, who named the river for another Jesuit priest. A post office opened in 1896, tying the settlement to the mail and travel network that followed the river valleys. Today, St. Regis School District serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade across three schools. That K-12 setup, the river confluence, and the forest boundary give the CDP a clear local rhythm: a small school-centered community at the point where two western Montana landscapes come together.
