About St. Stephen

St. Stephen is a Stearns County city whose street grid grew out of a Slovene Catholic settlement. Slovene immigrants founded the community, and it incorporated in 1914. The clearest local landmark is the Church of St. Stephen, a Romanesque Revival building completed in 1903 with an 1890 rectory behind it; both are on the National Register. The church was part of a chain of rural Catholic hamlets that gave central Stearns County its distinctive settlement pattern.

That history still gives St. Stephen a stronger identity than its size suggests. Stearns County Roads 2 and 5 run through the city, with Roads 1 and 17 nearby, while Sartell–St. Stephen School District 748 ties the community to the larger St. Cloud area. The local map is a mix of farm-country roads, a historic church, and a town that started with immigrant families building a place around worship. If you’re passing through, the church and its rectory tell the story faster than a generic city sign ever could.
