Stamford, VT

Stamford village is the main settlement in the southern part of the Town of Stamford, pressed into the North Branch of the Hoosic River valley near the Massachusetts line. Vermont Routes 8 and 100 share Main Street through the village, running north toward Heartwellville and south into Massachusetts. The valley floor carries the roads, homes, school, and library, while forested mountain land rises on both sides. That arrangement gives Stamford a clear center inside a much larger rural town.

Stamford’s history follows the river. Early settlers arrived from Massachusetts and Connecticut, cleared farms, and built mills along the waterways; by the nineteenth century the town also had stores, churches, a post office, a blacksmith, and small manufacturing. The current Stamford Elementary School and Community Library sit at 986 Main Road, keeping two everyday institutions in the same village setting. The town plan calls for strengthening the village center and protecting the forested slopes around the valley. Stamford remains a borderland crossroads where a two-route Main Street, a school, a library, and the North Branch all share a narrow Vermont valley.
