Stanhope, NJ

Stanhope is a small, quiet borough tucked into southern Sussex County, sitting right along the shores of Lake Musconetcong and the Musconetcong River. Home to around 3,500 residents, it offers a relaxed, small-town feel surrounded by the greenery of the New Jersey Highlands. The community grew around its 19th-century ironworks and the old Morris Canal, and you can still see that historic charm in its cozy riverside neighborhoods and longtime local staples like the Stanhope House.

For families, the borough runs its own elementary and middle school programs, with teenagers attending Lenape Valley Regional High School. Weekend life usually revolves around the outdoors, whether you are kayaking on the lake, hiking nearby trails in Allamuchy Mountain, or exploring the surrounding parklands. Stanhope also makes a practical home base for commuters, offering quick access to Route 206, Interstate 80, and the nearby Netcong train station for travel across northern New Jersey and into New York City.
