Stanwood, IA

Stanwood grew where the railroad crossed eastern Cedar County. The town was platted in 1868, its first house went up in 1869, and it was named for H. P. Stanwood, a Chicago & North Western railroad official. The depot arrived with the town, and the old line once carried passengers toward Tipton and beyond. The last passenger train through Stanwood ran in 1960, but the surviving depot-era layout still gives the place its first read: a town whose streets and early business life were set out beside the rails.

Stanwood's library adds a second timeline. The Junior Women's Club started it in 1948, and the collection moved through the school library, Legion Building, Herald Building, and Memorial Building before reaching its current home at 202 East Broadway after a 1994 groundbreaking. The calendar brings the town together for a September Fun Fest, spring garage-sale weekend, library programs, and city meetings. Stanwood feels like a Cedar County town where the railroad set the bones and a library, a festival, and everyday civic routines keep them in use.
