Star, NC

Star is a Montgomery County town on a ridge that drains west toward the Little River, in the middle of North Carolina’s Uwharrie country. Gold was found around the river in the 1860s, and by 1874 mining operations were working this part of the county. The railroad arrived in 1895 with a branch from the Aberdeen and West End line, and Star incorporated soon after in 1897. That sequence—gold first, railroad next—set the town’s early shape before hosiery mills became another major part of local life.

Star still wears both eras. The Star History Museum keeps mining and mill artifacts in the old town story, while the Star Historic District holds onto the streets and buildings that grew around those industries. The town is also marked as the geographic center of North Carolina, though the actual plaque sits on private land and is not open for visits. Nearby Uwharrie National Forest adds the larger landscape, but the local scoop is simpler: Star is a ridge town with gold in its past, hosiery in its industrial memory, and a railroad line that helped turn a mining area into a town.
