Stateburg, SC

Stateburg is a Sumter County CDP of 1,593 residents in the 2020 census, set in the High Hills of Santee. Its story reaches back to the colonial and early state era: the settlement became a county seat in 1785, then lost that role when Claremont County disappeared in 1800. The surrounding historic district holds Borough House Plantation, the Church of the Holy Cross, High Hills of Santee Baptist Church, and other properties tied to the region’s plantation economy, summer migration, religion, and politics.
