Steelville, MO

Steelville is Crawford County’s seat, set where Routes 8 and 19 meet in the foothills of the Ozarks. James Steel, the landowner who gave the town its name, helped set the early outline, while the Meramec River just north of town supplied the geography that still drives the local calendar. Steelville calls itself Missouri’s “Floating Capital,” and that nickname makes sense once summer arrives: the Meramec, Huzzah, and Courtois rivers bring canoeists, rafters, anglers, campgrounds, and float-trip traffic into the area.

Back in town, the scene shifts to a main street with early-1900s storefronts, small shops, food stops, and places to hear live music. The Meramec Music Theatre and Wildwood Springs Lodge add a stage-and-dance-hall thread to the river recreation, while Steelville R-III ties the city to its surrounding countryside through local schools. The town’s appeal is the handoff between water and pavement: spend the morning on a spring-fed river, then head into the county seat for supplies, antiques, a concert, or a meal before turning back toward the Ozark roads.
