About Steinauer
Steinauer, locally pronounced “Steener,” was founded by Anton, Nicholas, and Joseph Steinauer, brothers who left Switzerland and settled here in 1856. The post office and village name arrived in 1874, and the community reached 248 residents in 1910, when it had a bank, stores, hotel, lumber yard, and repair trades. St. Anthony's Catholic Church followed in 1889, its parochial school in 1912, and the Knights of Columbus Hall in 1929. The Bank of Steinauer remains in the Steinauer family, while HTRS Public Schools now serves the area from Humboldt. The hall's annual March brunch keeps one historic gathering place in current use.
