About Stendal
Stendal is an unincorporated community and census designated place in southern Lockhart Township, Pike County, Indiana, United States. Stendal lies along State Road 257, southeast of Petersburg, the county seat of Pike County. Stendal was laid out in 1867, and named after Stendal, in Germany. In 1912, Lockhart Township built a frame building in Stendal to function as a new school. In addition to housing a grade school the building also served as a new high school, registered that same year. That mix gives Stendal a clear local shape within Indiana, with older layers still visible in current places. The local scoop is a place whose streets, landmarks, and institutions keep its earlier story close to the present. A post office has been in operation at Stendal since 1873.
