Stewartsville, MO

Stewartsville is a city in southwest DeKalb County, Missouri, with 733 residents in the 2020 census. George Tetherow platted the settlement in 1854 under the name Tethertown, and a post office called Stewartsville followed in 1855. The later name honored Robert M. Stewart, a former Missouri governor. U.S. Route 36 runs along the city, connecting its farm-country streets with St. Joseph and the wider northwest Missouri road map.

The Tethertown-to-Stewartsville change still gives the city a useful local story: an early founder’s name gave way to a state leader’s name as the community settled into its postal and civic role.
