Stockton, MO

Stockton is the Cedar County seat in southwest Missouri, about 22 miles west of Bolivar and just northwest of Stockton Lake at the junction of State Routes 32 and 39. The town was platted in 1846 as Lancaster, renamed Fremont in 1847, and eventually became Stockton. Its county-seat role gives downtown a civic center, with commercial businesses clustered around the core and residential streets behind them.

The lake sits just west of town, and Stockton R-I schools, a branch of the Cedar County Library District, and the reservoir’s boating and fishing country give residents three distinct local reference points: civic work, school and library routines, and a major body of water on the edge of the Ozarks. Stockton Lake reaches across three counties and supplies a much larger regional recreation landscape. The city’s relationship with the lake is central to both its location and its regional reputation. Stockton is a small county seat with a town center and a large lake immediately beside it.
