Stoneboro, PA

Stoneboro is a borough in eastern Mercer County, Pennsylvania, near Sandy Lake and the coal country of western Pennsylvania. The 2020 census counted 946 residents. State Route 62 passes through the borough, and the lake, former mine lands, churches, and older commercial buildings give the town a layered local map. The Wesleyan Methodist Camp on Fredonia Road remains a major seasonal institution, with the Stoneboro Wesleyan Methodist School on its grounds. Stoneboro is part of the Hermitage micropolitan area.

The borough was incorporated on August 25, 1866, and named for Amasa Stone, a railroad and industrial leader connected to the Mercer Iron and Coal Company. Coal moved out by rail from the area in the 1860s, helping create the town around the mine and transportation network. The Wesleyan camp began in 1901, and people still come from several states for its summer meetings. Stoneboro’s history also includes Sandy Lake, the Underground Railroad, local churches, and a long-running bank on Lake Street. It is a small Mercer County borough where coal, faith, and lake country share the same streets.
