Stony Brook is a North Shore hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Brookhaven on Long Island. It began as a colonial-era agricultural community, later became a resort area, and today is best known for Stony Brook University. The result is a place with more layers than a typical suburb: historic village character, harbor and North Shore scenery, university life, and access to the broader New York metro all sit close together.
