Stoutsville, OH

Stoutsville is a Fairfield County village that began when Benjamin Stout laid it out in 1854 and put his own name on the map. A post office has served the village since 1855, and the first school followed the patterns of rural Ohio education: small districts near springs and streams, then a larger two-story brick school as Stoutsville became an educational center. By 1900 high school classes were held there, and the village even became a destination for students from Oakland when a bus connected the township.

Today Stoutsville belongs to Amanda-Clearcreek Local School District, with the school system centered in Amanda. The village itself remains a small Fairfield County crossroads of homes, churches, farm roads, and local businesses. The post office and the original village layout keep daily errands tied to the center, while Lancaster and Columbus provide larger shopping, work, and cultural options. Stoutsville has moved from a place with a two-story school and one graduating senior to a community whose children travel outward for classes, but the school’s history still sits at the heart of how residents remember the village.
