Strykersville, NY

Strykersville is a hamlet in western Wyoming County, mostly within the Town of Sheldon with a small southern portion in Java. New York Route 78 runs through the community, linking its rural roads with the rest of the county and the nearby Erie County line. Early land purchases included Garret Stryker, William Richardson, and Philo Stevens, names that help show how a place with a modest footprint became known as Strykersville.

The Strykersville Pioneer Cemetery is one of the clearest windows into that beginning. The cemetery on Perry Road, just north of Route 78, opened for burials in 1811 and remained active until a newer cemetery opened across town in 1867. The Sheldon Historical Society keeps that history close through its schoolhouse museum, archives, and local research. Route 78 traffic, farm roads, old family names, and the cemetery's stone fence give Strykersville a strong sense of continuity.
