About Sublette
Sublette is Haskell County’s seat, a southwestern Kansas city founded in 1912 and named for William Lewis Sublette, the fur trader and Rocky Mountain Fur Company partner. The town took shape when the Santa Fe railroad reached the county but bypassed the earlier county seat of Santa Fe; that settlement split into the present sites of Sublette and Satanta. Around it, Haskell County opens into the High Plains, with ranching and farming part of the long local record. Sublette is a county-seat town with a railroad-era beginning and a name borrowed from the mountain-man story of the American West.
