Sudan, TX

Sudan is a Lamb County city at the junction of U.S. Highway 84, Farm Roads 298, 303, and 1843, alongside the Santa Fe Railroad. The community developed in 1917-18 after the railroad's Lubbock-Texico branch made room for a hotel, a post office, and a town site; Sudan incorporated in 1925. The 2020 census counted 940 residents. The rail and highway junction place Sudan in the working landscape of west-central Texas.

Sudan Independent School District is one of the town's most visible institutions. Sudan High School has received National Blue Ribbon recognition, and the school's academic and athletic record gives the community a gathering point that reaches beyond the city grid. The railroad still marks the town's original reason for being, while U.S. 84 and the farm roads now carry most of the movement through Lamb County. Sudan is a compact West Texas city whose history runs from ranch and school land, to rail service, to the school and highway network that organizes current routines.
