Sully, IA

Sully is a Jasper County city laid out in 1882 and incorporated in 1901, with its name tied to railroad man Alfred Sully. It sits south of Interstate 80 on the Diamond Trail, between the larger pull of Grinnell, Newton, and Pella. The city square is still the useful center of the place: large trees shade the park, and the square holds a rose garden, gazebo, playground, stage, and Jasper County Freedom Rock. A separate ballpark on the east side adds two softball fields and the summer concession-stand rhythm that makes a small town's calendar feel local.

The Community Center houses the Sully library, while Lynnville-Sully Community School and Sully Christian keep education near the center of town. The Diamond Trail name carries into recreation too: the nine-hole Diamond Trail Golf Club sits four miles east in Lynnville. Sully's identity is less about one landmark than the way the pieces fit—railroad-era plat, farm-country roads, a square that doubles as park and gathering place, and a school-and-sports network shared with nearby Lynnville. It is a compact Iowa city with a very legible local map.
