Summerton sits in southwestern Clarendon County, a short drive from Lake Marion and the old Santee River country. The town grew in the nineteenth century as plantation families moved inland from the river's mosquito-heavy lowlands, and its crossroads position still gives it a practical role in the surrounding farm country. Interstate 95 passes just south, while the local school district, churches, small businesses, and county routes tie daily errands to a much larger rural area.

Summerton's name carries national weight because local families helped launch Briggs v. Elliott, the school-equality case that became part of the legal path to Brown v. Board of Education. The story began with the unequal conditions facing Black children in Clarendon County, including long walks and difficult crossings to reach school; it also includes the courage of parents, ministers, teachers, and students who kept pressing the case forward.
