About Summertown
Summertown is an unincorporated Lawrence County community and census-designated place along Tennessee Route 20 in the county's northeast corner. U.S. 43 is about two miles east, while Hohenwald lies roughly 19 miles northwest. The community's mailing reach spills into parts of Lewis and Maury counties, but the census boundary covers the Lawrence County settlement. Saw Creek's north and south forks drain toward the Buffalo River, giving Summertown a small-watershed geography; the 2020 census counted 856 residents.
Schools are the clearest local institutions: Summertown Elementary on Corbin Street, Summertown Middle on West College Street, and Summertown High on West College Street all sit in the community and share the Lawrence County school system. A utility district that began with one well and one tank in the mid-1960s now serves more than 1,700 customers across Summertown and northern Lawrence County. Route 20, the schools, water system, and nearby farms give the spread-out community its practical center. That arrangement gives the crossroads a recognizable civic rhythm.
